What it does

Rules, skills, hooks and MCP servers each configure one aspect of the agent. Once a team has a working combination, the problem becomes distribution: getting the same setup onto every machine and keeping it current. Plugins are that package.

Installing a plugin brings its whole bundle across at once, which is how a new engineer inherits the house conventions on day one instead of discovering them in code review. Teams and Enterprise accounts get an internal marketplace for plugins that should never leave the company.

Plugins are distinct from editor extensions. A plugin configures the agent's behaviour and capabilities; an extension adds editor functionality such as a language server or a theme.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Cursor plugin and an extension?
A plugin bundles agent configuration: rules, skills, hooks and MCP servers. An extension is a VS Code style editor add-on such as a linter, debugger or theme. They solve different problems and are installed from different places.
Can my company keep plugins private?
Yes. The Teams plan includes a team marketplace for internal rules, skills and plugins, so a bundle can be published to your organisation without going public.
