Cursor for students

Cursor has no standing student discount. Its own students page sends you to campus event promotions instead, and the free Hobby plan covers most coursework.

  • Hobby free for everyone
  • No verification flow
  • Promotions via campus events

What is actually available

  • The Hobby plan

    Free, permanently

The same editor as every paid tier, with a limited Agent request allowance and access to Composer. No credit card, no expiry, no verification step.

  • Campus event promotions

    Varies by event

Cursor's own answer to the discount question points at on-campus and online events. Upgrades are handed out there rather than through a standing offer you can apply for.

  • The campus newsletter

    Free

Cursor runs a campus mailing list for early access to events and, in its own wording, exclusive discounts. It is the only published route to hearing about an offer before it runs out.

  • Yearly billing

    $16 / mo. instead of $20 / mo.

Not a student discount, but the only self-serve reduction anyone gets: 20 percent off any paid tier when billed annually.

Why the answer keeps changing

Student pricing for AI developer tools has been unstable across the whole category, and Cursor is no exception. Offers appear, run for a defined window, and close. Articles written during one of those windows stay online long after it ends, which is why a search for a Cursor student discount returns confident claims that no longer hold.

The reliable move is to read the primary source. The students page carries a short question and answer section, and the discount question is answered there in Cursor's own words. On 25 September 2026 that answer was: anyone can get started with Cursor for free, and to upgrade your access, look out for promotions at on-campus and online events.

That phrasing rules two things in and one thing out. In: a genuinely free tier and real upgrade promotions. Out: a self-serve discount you can claim today by proving enrolment.

How far the free plan gets you

For most coursework, further than people expect. Hobby is not a crippled build of the editor. It is the same application with the same extension support, the same Tab prediction and the same settings, on a capped Agent allowance.

Where it runs short is sustained agent work: a term project where you lean on the agent for several hours a day will hit the ceiling. Two habits stretch it noticeably.

  • Leave the model on Auto. Auto draws from the Cursor Models pool, which includes Composer 2.5, Cursor's own and cheapest model. Pinning every request to a frontier model spends your allowance far faster for tasks that did not need the extra reasoning.
  • Use Tab more and the agent less. Tab prediction is available on every plan and does not draw on the Agent request allowance at all. A surprising share of what people ask an agent to do is a multi-line edit that Tab will offer for free.

If you want Pro anyway

Pro is $20 / mo., or $16 / mo. a month when billed yearly, which is a 20 percent reduction and the only discount available without an invitation. Before paying, it is worth checking what you already have: some universities negotiate departmental licences for developer tools, and that is usually a question for a lab administrator rather than a support ticket.

One thing not to do is buy a cheap Cursor subscription from a third-party seller. Cursor states that it authorises no resellers, that such accounts may be fraudulent or obtained through abuse of its systems, and that they can be suspended at any time. A student budget is exactly the budget that cannot absorb losing an account mid-term.

The campus programme

Alongside the pricing question, the students page promotes a campus programme that invites students to share expertise, organise events, and build a local builder community. Since the published route to an upgrade runs through events, the people who organise those events are structurally closest to the offers. If a discount matters to you, that is a more direct path than waiting for an announcement.

Frequently asked questions

Does Cursor offer a student discount?
Not as a standing offer. Cursor's students page answers the question directly: anyone can get started with Cursor for free, and to upgrade your access you should look out for promotions at its on-campus and online events. There is no application form or verification flow for a permanent student rate.
Is Cursor free for students?
Cursor is free for everyone on the Hobby plan, students included. That plan needs no credit card and has no time limit, but its Agent request allowance is capped, so heavy agent use will exhaust it.
How do I get Cursor Pro as a student?
Either pay for it like any other user, at $20 a month or $16 a month billed yearly, or wait for a campus promotion. Cursor distributes student upgrades through events rather than an always-on discount, and signing up for its campus newsletter is the published way to hear about them.
Is there a Cursor student verification page?
There is no verification flow on the students page at the moment. When Cursor has run student offers, eligibility has been handled as part of the promotion rather than through a permanent verification portal.
Can I bring Cursor to my university?
Cursor runs a campus programme inviting students to share expertise, organise events and build a local community. The students page links to it under Bring Cursor to your campus, and it is the route most closely tied to the event promotions.
Do student accounts get different features?
No. A student on Pro has exactly the same feature set as anyone else on Pro. Cursor's tiers differ by included agent usage, not by capability, so there is no student-only version of the editor.
