You are buying usage, not features
Read the four cards side by side and the pattern is hard to miss. Pro, Pro+ and Ultra list almost the same bullets. All three give frontier models, MCP servers, skills, hooks, cloud agents and Bugbot. The line that changes is the first one: Pro+ says 3x Pro limits on Agent and Ultra says 20x Pro limits on Agent.
That makes the upgrade question simpler than it looks. You do not move to Ultra to unlock something. You move because you ran out. If you are not hitting the ceiling on Pro, the extra $40 or $180 a month buys headroom you will not use.
The same logic runs through Teams. Standard at $40 a seat is Individual plus the administrative layer: central billing, a private marketplace, usage analytics, team-wide privacy mode and SAML or OIDC single sign-on. Premium at $120 adds five times the Agent allowance per seat and nothing else.
The two usage pools
Included usage is not one number. Cursor splits it in two, and both reset with your monthly billing cycle.
- Cursor Models covers Grok 4.7, Grok 4.6, Grok 4.5 and Composer 2.5, and is the pool Cursor describes as having significantly more included usage. This is what Auto draws on when you leave the model picker alone.
- Other Models covers third-party models such as Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Fable 5.1, GPT-5.6 and Gemini 3.1 Pro, charged at each model's API price. Pro, Pro+ and Ultra include this pool with the option to pay for more.
This is the single most useful thing to understand before choosing a tier. A developer who leaves the model on Auto will get much further on Pro than one who pins every request to Opus 5.5 Max, because the two are drawing from different buckets at very different rates. Both pools are visible in editor settings and on the usage dashboard.
What happens when you run out
Nothing stops, and nothing degrades. Cursor states that on-demand usage continues at the same API rates and that requests are never downgraded in quality or speed, so the failure mode is a larger invoice rather than a slower editor. The alternative is upgrading a tier for more included usage.
If predictability matters more than throughput, the usage dashboard is where you watch the burn rate, and Enterprise plans pool usage across the organisation instead of per seat.
What a month actually costs
Cursor publishes its own guidance on total monthly usage by working habit, which is more honest than a feature matrix and more useful for choosing a tier.
| Profile | Total monthly usage |
|---|---|
| Daily Tab users | Typically within included usage |
| Limited Agent users | Often within included usage |
| Daily Agent users | Typically $60 to $100 a month in total usage |
| Power users running multiple agents | Often $200+ a month |
Read the bottom two rows against the tier prices. A daily agent user consuming $60 to $100 of usage is the person Pro+ at $60 exists for, and someone regularly past $200 is being pointed at Ultra. The tiers are priced to approximate what each habit consumes, which is why upgrading often costs less than the on-demand line it replaces.
The plan most comparisons miss
Cursor sells a region-locked tier called Start, available to developers in India at ₹649 / mo.. Tax inclusive, billed monthly in INR by UPI, credit card or debit card. Every other individual plan shows its price before tax.
It is not a cheap Pro. Start includes generous use of the Cursor Models pool, cloud agents, Cursor for iOS, and plugins, MCP servers, hooks and skills, with the Grok models running in non-fast mode. What it leaves out is substantial: the Other Models pool, on-demand usage, Auto, Bugbot, Automations and the Cursor SDK. Anyone who needs a frontier model from a third party needs Pro.
Max Mode is a legacy feature
Searches for Max Mode still turn up plenty of advice about when to switch it on. It extends a model's context window past its default limit and bills at the model's API rate plus 20 percent, and Cursor now documents it as available only on legacy request-based plans. If you signed up recently, it is not a lever you have.
Picking a tier
- Evaluating Cursor at all. Hobby. No card, and the editor is the same editor.
- Using an agent most days. Pro. Cursor's own guidance points daily agent users at Pro+, but Pro is the cheaper place to find out whether you hit the ceiling.
- Agents running most of the working day. Pro+, then Ultra if the on-demand line on your invoice exceeds the difference.
- More than a couple of people. Teams, for the SSO and central billing as much as the agent allowance.
- Procurement, invoicing or access controls involved. Enterprise, which is the only tier with SCIM, audit logs and repository or model access controls.
